Internationally speaking, the ‘Hul’, the traditional white lace hood, is perhaps the most recognizable element of Dutch costume.

The entire community has never been seen together like this before, sailing on an old traditional ‘botter’ on the IJsselmeer.

To create this unique image, we went out to sea with four ‘botters’ and more than 80 Volendam residents, towards the beautiful Dutch sunset. The enchanting gathering of the Volendam community, dressed in their iconic costumes, against the beautiful backdrop of the setting sun on the IJsselmeer, is a celebration of culture and tradition. Now captured and immortalized in this limited print, as part of the collection The Dutch Odyssey.

The light, the confluence of boats and people, for me these are the ultimate moments in life that I want to capture. This image is truly the dream in terms of the perfect combination of circumstances.
