The volcanic Marquesas are a part of French Polynesia, a group of 118 islands spread out across 4,000 square kilometres of the Pacific Ocean – ‘Polynesia’ means ‘many islands’. The Marquesas have been inhabited for the longest of all the French Polynesian islands.

Interview

Huhina Warren Mahahe-Toua

Do you have spiritual or religious beliefs?

That’s a complex matter. My mother is an Adventist and my father is Catholic. I grew up with the church but my parents didn’t agree with each other on religion and there was a really negative atmosphere around it. I didn’t know which way to turn. They asked me too many questions. The first missionaries here forced their religion on us and ruined our culture. They destroyed our tikis and stopped us from making tattoos and wearing flowers. Nowadays there’s a fantastic revival, building on what little was left from the past.
