The Q'ero People

Situated on the central west coast of South America, Peru encompasses a great variety of biotopes and climates, in mountain, desert and coastal regions. One legacy of the country’s long and rich history are communities such as the Q’eros, who are thought to be the descendants of the ancient Inca civilization.

Interview

Fredy Flores Machacca

Is there someone you look up to?

That has to be my grandfather. Not long before he died, when I was about 9, he told me: ‘Get to know yourself well. If you truly know who you are, you’ll be able to do anything you want.’ His name was Pablo Machacca Waman and he was an intelligent man. When I was young I used to spend a lot of time with the elders and they would share their wisdom with me. They told me their stories from the past and taught me the traditions. I was always inquisitive as a child.
