‘Hey Jimmy, you came back!’ It’s Tom, Jimmy’s friend from his first visit. ‘Of course!’ says Jimmy, ‘I told you I’d come back. I brought this for you.’ Jimmy takes out the book and shows Tom the chapter with photographs of Vanuatu. Tom, obviously delighted with the gift, walks over to the village drum and starts beating it to announce our arrival.

As if by magic, the other Yakel villagers emerge. One by one they come up to us, greeting Jimmy with a handshake, and me, the newcomer, with a look of curiosity. They gather around us as we flip through the pages. There are ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ as they lean over our shoulders, pointing at the pictures with recognition and interest.
