Nenets - Siberia
Nenets |Yamal Peninsula, Ural Mountains, Siberia | Russia, 2018
Local tradition prescribes that certain actions are prohibited or disapproved of, and usually these rules apply to the women of the group. Women are not allowed to hang up their fur boots on the wires and poles running across the chum, to avoid the possibility of a man walking under them. Women are also discouraged from stepping over the ropes that attach the reindeer to the sleds. Another custom, which applies to everyone, is that one’s feet should not come into contact with the bed.

As cultures are rapidly changing through time, and the world’s cultural diversity is at risk, now is the moment to act. The JNF supports Indigenous communities in preserving and passing on their traditional heritage and knowledge by investing in reciprocity and educational projects.
