Korafe - Papua New Guinea
Korafe | Amuioan, Tufi, Oro province | Papua New Guinea, 2017
The Korafe people are famous for the impressive facial tattoos with organic motifs worn by the women. The application of the tattoo is a female rite of passage; when it is complete, the young woman is considered to be ready for marriage. The designs are inspired by bird feathers. The tattoos are applied by experienced older women who take a sharp lemongrass thorn dipped in charcoal and squid ink and knock it into the skin.

With its projects, the Jimmy Nelson Foundation (JNF) is completing the circle Jimmy has started. As cultures are rapidly changing through time, and the world’s cultural diversity is at risk, now is the moment to act. The JNF supports Indigenous communities in preserving and passing on their traditional heritage and knowledge by investing in reciprocity and educational projects.
