Kazakh - Mongolia
Esker, Kazakh | Altai mountains, Altantsogts, Bayan-lgii province | Mongolia, 2017
Nomadic Kazakhs and many Khalkha Mongols live part of the year in ger tents. They are ideally designed for this nomadic way of life and very easy to assemble and transport. The sturdy circular wooden construction is covered with thick woollen and felt cloth and insulated with an extra layer of wool to withstand the intense Mongolian winds. Due to the intimacy of the living conditions, it is very important that everybody knows and accepts their place in the family while in the ger.

With its projects, the Jimmy Nelson Foundation (JNF) is completing the circle Jimmy has started. As cultures are rapidly changing through time, and the world’s cultural diversity is at risk, now is the moment to act. The JNF supports Indigenous communities in preserving and passing on their traditional heritage and knowledge by investing in reciprocity and educational projects.
