Waves Around The World - A Monument to Connection at SAIL 2025
4 August 2025
In 2025, Amsterdam celebrates its 750th anniversary — and at the heart of SAIL, from the 20th until the 24th of August, a breathtaking new installation, Waves around the World, will rise from the harbour.
This monumental structure, shaped like a lighthouse, will honour the spirit of travel, refuge, and cultural exchange. Outside, you’ll find stunning portraits of Dutch communities in klederdracht from Between the Sea and the Sky. Inside, you’ll journey further — encountering powerful images of cultures from across the globe.
We’re grateful to the SAIL organisation for inviting us to contribute to this extraordinary event, and for the chance to offer an artistic reflection on the themes of identity, heritage, and connection. As part of the installation, change consultancy boutique &samhoud will introduce an AI-driven experience titled Mirror of Humanity, designed to bring the human perspective back into artificial intelligence — with the aim of building fairer, more inclusive models for the future.
More than an exhibition, Waves around the World is a space for remembrance, conversation, and inspiration. A beacon amidst the ships, it invites visitors to reflect on who we are, where we come from, and what unites us.
We’re honoured that Jimmy Nelson has been invited to participate as Artist in Residence for SAIL 2025, and are excited to help shape this special edition through his lens.
Join us at SAIL 2025 for this unforgettable encounter between sea, sky, and humanity.
