For the first time, Jimmy Nelson’s work returns to the very shores that shaped it. Exhibited within the communities he has spent decades photographing.

This autumn, Te Fare Manaha, the Museum of Tahiti and the Islands, welcomes an exhibition built at the heart of the Marquesas Islands: their people, their traditions, and the living culture that continues to define them today.

This is not a retrospective. New photographs, made especially for this exhibition with Jimmy’s 8×10 large-format camera, sit alongside works from across his four-decade body of work — brought into direct dialogue with Marquesan artists, whose own practice shapes the exhibition as much as the photographs themselves. The result is a genuine collaboration: not a story told about the Marquesas, but one told with it.

The Marquesas Islands hold some of the most distinct cultural traditions in the Pacific, an identity carried forward through art, tattoo, dance, and oral history, and very much alive in the present. This exhibition is an invitation to encounter that identity on its own terms: rooted, proud, and unmistakably its own.
