The Bardi People

Illustration Kangaroo - The Bardi People- Jimmy Nelson - Homage to Humanity
The Kimberley is a beautifully stark, stony desert landscape where living conditions can be harsh. The Aboriginal people living here represent one of world’s oldest surviving cultures, and they have f illed their surroundings with their songs and their stories recorded in rock paintings. Their history is woven into this landscape.

The Walkabout

For young Aboriginal boys the Walkabout is a rite of passage, a transition from childhood to adulthood. At the age of about 13 they are sent into the wilderness for six months or so to fend for themselves. It is said that in this period they follow the paths of their ancestors who formed the world before changing into natural objects such as rocks and trees. These objects are now sacred places that feature in stories about the Dreamtime, and the stories serve as a roadmap during the Walkabout.

Bardi Ilma ritual

The Bardi Ilma is a specific Corroboree ritual involving dance, singing and the use of emblematic totems: ceremonial objects made out of feathers and wood. The form these objects take is derived from dreams caused by the ancestors. The Bardi people believe they have lived before as spirits and will live on when their time on earth is over.
