Rijssen - The Netherlands
Rijssen, Overijssel | the Netherlands, 2021
Much of Rijssen’s success was down to the enterprising Ter Horst family. In 1752, its patriarch, Jan ter Horst, bought a windmill in De Beemster, had it transported to Rijssen and rebuilt with a few adaptations. It was used to press oil from linseed and hull barley. Later, Jan’s offspring began to process jute from India. The factory chimneys towered over the houses, beacons drawing in hundreds of Rijsseners who took jobs there as soon as they left school at the age of 12, keen to work at the ‘Steam’, as they called it.
